How should you take this medication?
Prozac should be taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Prozac usually is taken once or twice a day. To be effective, it should be taken regularly. Make a habit of taking it at the same
time you do some other daily activity. It may be 4 weeks before you feel any relief from your depression, but the drug's effects should last about 9 months after a 3-month treatment regimen
. For obsessive-compulsive disorder, the full effect may take 5 weeks to appear.

Overdosage
Establish and maintain an airway; ensure adequate oxygenation and ventilation. Activated charcoal, which may be used with sorbitol, may be as or more effective than emesis or lavage, and should be con
sidered in treating overdose.

Older adults¡XMany medicines have not been tested in older people. Therefore, it may not be known whether they work exactly the same way they do in younger adults or if they cause different side effec
s or problems in older people. In studies done to date that included elderly people, Prozac did not cause different side effects or problems in older people than it did in younger adults.

Why is this drug prescribed?
Prozac is used to treat mental depression. It is also used to treat obsessive-compulsive disorder, bulimia nervosa, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder. Prozac also may be used for other cond
itions as determined by your doctor. Prozac belongs to a group of medicines known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). These medicines are thought to work by increasing the act
ivity of a chemical called serotonin in the brain.

What side effects may occur?
Check with your doctor as soon as possible if any of the following side effects occur: - difficulty in concentration, drowsiness, excessive hunger, fast heartbeat, headache, shakiness or unst
eady walk, or unusual tiredness or weakness; symptoms of hyponatremia (low blood sodium), including confusion, convulsions (seizures), drowsiness, dryness of mouth, increased thirst, lack of energy;
symptoms of serotonin syndrome, including diarrhea, fever, increased sweating, mood or behavior changes, overactive reflexes, racing heartbeat, restlessness, shivering or shaking; talking, feeling,
and acting with excitement and activity you cannot control; trouble in breathing; unusual or incomplete body or facial movements;
