Side Effects of This Medicine
Although side effects from Claritin are not common, they can occur. You may have discolored urine; this effect is harmless. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:

Special warnings about this medication
Before taking Claritin, - tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to Claritin or any other drugs. - tell your doctor and pharmacist what prescription and nonprescription medi
cations you are taking, especially erythromycin (E-Mycin), ketoconazole (Nizoral), medications for asthma or colds, medications for depression, muscle relaxants, pain medications, sedatives, sleeping
pills, tranquilizers, and vitamins. - tell your doctor if you have or have ever had kidney or liver disease. - tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-fe
eding. - plan to avoid unnecessary or prolonged exposure to sunlight and to wear protective clothing, sunglasses, and sunscreen.

Proper Use of This Medicine
When taken at the recommended dose, once a day CLARITIN does not cause drowsiness which is common with all over-the-counter and some prescription antihistamines. (Drowsiness rates vary among products.
) All antihistamines that cause drowsiness must caution users about operating motor vehicles or heavy machinery. CLARITIN, on the other hand, is not required to carry such warnings.

Description
Claritin is used to relieve hay fever and allergy symptoms, including sneezing; runny nose; and red, itchy, tearing eyes. Claritin is in a class of medications called antihistamines. It works by block
ing histamine, a substance in the body that causes allergic symptoms. Claritin may cause less drowsiness than other antihistamines.

What special precautions should I follow?
Hydroxyzine is not recommended for use in the first months of pregnancy since it has been shown to cause birth defects in animal studies when given in doses many times higher than the usual human dose
. Be sure you have discussed this with your doctor. Desloratadine and fexofenadine have not been studied in pregnant women. However, studies in animals have shown that these medicines cause b
irth defects or other problems when given in doses higher than the usual human dose. Azatadine, brompheniramine, cetirizine, chlorpheniramine, clemastine, cyproheptadine, dexchlorpheniramine
, dimenhydrinate, diphenhydramine, doxylamine, and loratadine have not been studied in pregnant women.
