What is this Drug
Buspirone (byoo-SPYE-rone) is used to treat certain anxiety disorders or to relieve the symptoms of anxiety. However, buspirone usually is not used for anxiety or tension caused by the stress of every
day life.
It is not known exactly how buspirone works to relieve the symptoms of anxiety. Buspirone is thought to work by decreasing the amount and actions of a chemical known as serotonin in
certain parts of the brain.

Before Using This Medicine
Possible Concerns Related to Buspirone's Binding to Dopamine Receptors:
Because buspirone can bind to central dopamine receptors, a question has been raised about its potential to cause acute and
chronic changes in dopamine mediated neurological function (e.g., dystonia, pseudoparkinsonism, akathisia, and tardive dyskinesia). Clinical experience in controlled trials has failed to identify any
significant neuroleptic-like activity; however, a syndrome of restlessness, appearing shortly after initiation of treatment, has been reported in some small fraction of buspirone treated patients. The
syndrome may be explained in several ways.

Other Medicines
In vitro, buspirone does not displace tightly bound drugs like phenytoin, propranolol and warfarin from serum proteins. However, there has been 1 report of prolonged prothrombin time when buspirone wa
s added to the regimen of a patient treated with warfarin. The patient was also chronically receiving phenytoin, phenobarbital, digoxin and Synthroid. In vitro, buspirone may displace less firmly boun
d drugs like digoxin. The clinical significance of this property is unknown.

How should this medicine be used?
Buspirone comes as a tablet to take by mouth. It usually is taken two or three times a day. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any
part you do not understand. Take buspirone exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.
Continue to take buspirone even if you fe
el well. Do not stop taking buspirone without talking to your doctor, especially if you have taken large doses for a long time. Your doctor probably will decrease your dose gradually. This drug must b
e taken regularly for a few weeks before its full effect is felt.

DRUG ABUSE AND DEPENDENCE :
When you are taking buspirone, it is especially important that your health care professional know if you are taking any of the following:
- Erythromycin (e.g., ERYC, E.E.S.) or
- Itraco
nazole (e.g., Sporanox)¡XHigher blood levels of buspirone may occur, increasing the chance of side effects. Your doctor may change the dose of buspirone that you take
- Monoamine oxidase (MAO) i
ibitor activity (isocarboxazid [e.g., Marplan], phenelzine [e.g., Nardil], procarbazine [e.g., Matulane], selegiline at doses more than 10 mg a day [e.g., Eldepryl], tranylcypromine [e.g., Parnate])¡X
aking buspirone while you are taking monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors may cause high blood pressure

What side effects may occur?
Along with its needed effects, a medicine may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.
Check with your
doctor as soon as possible if any of the following side effects occur:
Chest pain; confusion; fast or pounding heartbeat; fever; incoordination; mental depression; muscle weakness; num
bness, tingling, pain, or weakness in hands or feet; skin rash or hives; stiffness of arms or legs; sore throat; uncontrolled movements of the body
